It’s no secret that country singers lean to right politically; Garth Brooks, Tanya Tucker, Charlie Daniels and, of course, Toby Keith. The only two on the other side are perhaps Tim McGraw and the Dixie Chicks plus the star of this post, Willie Nelson.
Recently Nelson held a concert down in Texas to raise funds for Beto O’Rourke, who is challenging incumbent Republican Ted Cruz for a US Senate seat. According to some recent polls, O’Rourke is leading by two points with about six weeks to go before the election.
Nelson has drawn the ire not just of fellow country singers, but also of many of the people who buy his records. But he is undeterred, however, saying he has the right to his opinion just like they have the right of their’s. Now his son Lukas has stepped into the fray, and quite eloquently.
“The issues that are important to him have less to do with him and more to do what is good for the community,” Lukas said. “Republican or Democrat, he has always stood for the candidate that best represented his values, which include love for thy neighbor, regardless of their skin color or nationality, sensibility with firearms, and healthcare that is not dominated by private companies who are just in the game for their own profits.”
